The hardest part about being honest is in the delivery itself. It is imperative to read the room, ensure that you are nested in the truth, then proceed to deliver without fear of reaction but how to achieve understanding in its aftermath. Regardless of what happens, you were honest and granted the ability to be free. Therefore, be honest, self-aware, socially aware, and emotionally intelligent, for all are required.
